Olympic protests are nearly as old as the Games themselves. However, the IOC has longstanding rules that forbid athlete and countries from protesting. The Games have also become entangled in a debate over the right of athletes to protest.

“Afro-beats” is a music genre that fuses African music with Black American influences to produce a compelling hybrid of culture and sound. The creation of this genre is largely attributed to Nigerian artist Fela Kuti who forged a rhythmic mix of West African beats and American jazz, soul, and funk, which was shot through with a potent streak of political awareness. There is however a new wave of Korean music that is adopting afro-beats elements. While some relish the new genre and its uniqueness, others have reservations about the adoption of afro-centric music elements by the Asian music industry.

Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established to give African-American students opportunities of higher education, examples include Howard University, Morehouse College, Spelman College etc.

The Bechdel test is a measure of the representation of women in fiction. It asks whether a work features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. Popular blockbuster movies which have been nominated for multiple Oscar and People’s Choice Awards like The Avengers (2013) and The Lord of The Rings Trilogy (2001, 2002, and 2003) have failed the Bechdel test.
